1st humanoid robot in space by ISRO
Before India’s could send humans in space they wanted to determine whether the conduction is safe enough to go in spaceflight at that time Robot came to the minds of scientists so the created Vyommitra which means Vyoma = space and mitra = friend, it is also called as half-humanoid since she has only half human like structure.
Vyommitra is a prototype female looking spacefaring half-humanoid robot being developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) made for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission, to function on board. Vyommitra was first unrevealed on January 22nd 2020 at the human spaceflight and exploration symposium in Bengaluru.
It’s an Artificial Intelligence-based robot which will accompany Indian astronauts in space mission and well also be a part of crewed experiment Gaganyaan missions prior to the crewed spaceflight missions.
Purpose of Vyommitra
Scientists aims not to fly animals onboard experiment missions unlike other nations that have carried out humanoid robots to understand better of what light weight and radiation do to the human body during long durations in space. It can monitor module parameter’s alert astronaut’s and perform life support operation. It also recognized the face of the VSSC director from the attached computer database and converted into text to speech to speak out the identity. “It will simulate the exact human function in space. It will check whether the system is right, this will be very useful to simulate as if a human is flying” said ISRO Chief K. Shivan.
Bengaluru headquartered ISRO had already told that they are planned to send two flight without crew ahead of Gaganyaan the first spaceflight will be scheduled around December 2020 and second around July 2021.
“There is some disturbance due to COVID, but still nothing is clear. We need to see, still we have six months of time left. We are trying to see if we can reach there,” a senior ISRO official told P T I.
The space agency is expected to launch the project Gaganyaan mission with an estimated price of Rs 10,000 crores in the tear of 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
Four of Indian air force fighter pilots has been selected for the Gaganyaan project are currently under training in Moscow.
The robotic system has been developed even as ISRO works to make the GSLV III rocket system suitable to fly humans. “Work is in progress for human rated GSLV Mk III. It will be ready for the first unmanned flight by the year end with a humanoid,” said Somnath.
Vyommitra is expected to be onboard uncrewed Gaganyaan mission to microgravity experiments and support astronauts in crewed missions. It is programmed to speak Hindi and English and perform multiple tasks. It can mimic human activity, recognize other humans, and respond to their commands. Technically, it can perform environment control and life support system function, handle switch panel operations, and give environmental sir operations, and give environmental air pressure change warning.
